@N1MALX Exhibition, Bonhams, Hong Kong

A celebration of over 20 Hong Kong artists in dialogue with global voices where animals inspire art, exploring the boundaries between humans and animals.

Animals have long played a central role in human culture—as symbols, muses, and reflections of our inner world. Drawing from mythology, history, and pop culture, the exhibition offers strikingly creative works that blur the boundaries between reality and imagination, observation and interpretation, inviting audiences to step beyond a human-centric perspective and imagine life through the eyes of other species.

In this age of illusion and disorientation, the bond between humans and animals has long transcended mere survival or physical interdependence, extending into profound realms of unspoken emotional resonance and spiritual solace.  The roles we inhabit have become so intertwined that the hierarchy between species dissolves into ambiguity.  Through paintings where animals occupy the first-person perspective, Michael Lau employs them also as metaphors for humans in modern existence — narrating how we, like creatures in the wild, stumble through disorientation, bruising ourselves while gradually carving paths to self-discovery. This is the odyssey of growth: a raw, instinctive navigation through life’s wilderness.  The artist’s signature blossoms — adorned with watchful, wide eyes — symbolize the myriad intersections along life’s florally adorned journey, in this trilogy of paintings. They are also an aspiring invocation: a tender reminder to embrace joy, flourish vibrantly, and bloom brightly amidst this kaleidoscopic world.
